WhatsApp Stopped Working on These Phones – Is Yours on the List?

Starting June 1, 2025, WhatsApp has officially ended support for several old iPhones and Android smartphones. If your phone’s on the list, the app will no longer open—or work—until you upgrade your device or operating system. Millions may be affected, especially users still holding on to older models.

WhatsApp’s Latest System Requirement Change

To keep up with security and performance standards, WhatsApp has raised its minimum system requirements:

PlatformMinimum OS Required
iPhoneiOS 15.1 or later
AndroidAndroid 5.1 (Lollipop)

Phones running older versions of these operating systems will no longer support WhatsApp.

Devices Losing WhatsApp Access from June 2025

Here are the iPhones and Android smartphones that have lost WhatsApp compatibility:

iPhones No Longer Supported:

  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus
  • iPhone 6s
  • iPhone 6s Plus
  • iPhone SE (1st Gen)

These models can’t be updated to iOS 15.1, making them permanently incompatible with WhatsApp.

Android Phones Affected:

  • Samsung Galaxy S4
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 3
  • Sony Xperia Z1
  • LG G2
  • Huawei Ascend P6
  • Motorola Moto G (1st Gen)
  • Moto E (2014)
  • Motorola Razr HD

If you’re using one of these Android phones, WhatsApp will no longer run—even if it did yesterday.

Why Is WhatsApp Doing This?

This isn’t a bug or temporary glitch. WhatsApp is phasing out older systems to:

  • Improve security protocols
  • Support advanced features
  • Ensure faster performance
  • Prevent vulnerabilities due to outdated OS

It’s a routine move that happens every year, but this time, some widely-used devices are affected.

What You Can Do Right Now

Worried about losing access? Here’s what you should do immediately:

  1. Check Your OS Version – Go to Settings > About > Software to check.
  2. Update Your Device – If updates are available, install them to regain access.
  3. Backup Chats – Save your WhatsApp data to Google Drive or iCloud.
  4. Consider a New Phone – If updates aren’t possible, upgrading may be your only option.
